Emily and Mattias
Tell me a little bit about yourselves
We’re a happy laid back couple that has a huge love for the outdoors and our dog Oscar!
We love going to the beach, boating, hiking, eating/drinking with friends. We both have an obsession with snowboarding and love watching and going to the AFL. Around the home Emily loves gardening but Mattias sit’s out on that one.
How did you meet? How long have you been together for?
We met way back in about 2008 (year 10) – through our friends who were dating at the time. We have been together for 11 years.
Share with me a bit about your proposal story
We got engaged in October 2020 in Canada. We went on one of our favourite hikes in the Mountains in Canmore on a crystal clear negative 20 degree day. I proposed once we got to the top.
Why did you choose the season you did for your wedding?
We both love being outdoors so it was a no brainer to have a spring/summer wedding as those are my favourite seasons. Mattias and I always wanted an outdoor wedding so having it during these seasons was essential. We also wanted to get married just before Christmas so November was our preferred month
Why did you choose your wedding venue?
We love the outdoors and loved the Nedlands Yacht Club location – on the banks of the Swan River where we spend a lot of our time on our boat. The large open grass area was a big plus as we felt this created a lot of room to add things (and even have the ceremony there if we wanted to). I also loved the fact that we really just locked in the venue and everything else we could create ourselves. I always imagined a marquee wedding, so I was able to do this and create an outdoor dance floor with fairy lights all around.
For our ceremony location – UWA Tropical Grove – We loved the garden venues at UWA.
How would you describe your overall vision and style for the wedding?
Fun, simple, elegant, casual
Were there any challenges you faced during the planning process and how did you overcome them?
Feeling overwhelmed by how much there was to do! I stayed organised and created a list of everything that I needed to do in order of monthly priorities and slowly checked off tasks each month. This way I had a clear idea of how everything was tracking.
Asking for help when needed. I would ask Mattias, my mum and mother in law for help when I was overwhelmed. Also asking suppliers for their suggestions!
What were some of your favourite moments throughout the day?
Walking down the aisle, the ceremony – I loved the whole ceremony. Our celebrant made it such a fun part of the day and my personal vows.
The dancefloor at the end of the night. Our dj created such a good vibe!
Time spent with our bridal party for photos and in the limo. This wasn’t something I thought about prior to the day but was so fun. Spending this time on our wedding day with our closest friends/family was an unexpected highlight.
What advice do you have for couples planning their weddings?
Get a wedding planner! You don’t want to be stressed and overwhelmed by all the small details. Write a wedding day journal to keep with your photo album to remember the day.
